July 5
Woke up at 6:15am today to 62 degree temperature. Packed up our stuff and hit the road. As we got to Bologna I immediately noticed how few people were here compared to Naples, Rome, and Florence. The streets were pretty quiet. We parked our bikes and took a little walking tour of the city center.
Nice architecture and quiet streets
The enormouse and, they say, unfinished, Basilica di San Pietro. Inside it has 22 separate chapels.
They show movies outside the Basilica during July and August on one of the largest movie screens in Italy.
We visited the anatomical theater in the Biblioteca comunale dell Archiginnasio. This building housed one of the earliest Universities in Europe dating to 1080. Today it is a public library and houses over 850,000 volumes - including over 15,000 from the 16th century.
The anatomical theater was built in 1637.
Another room in the library
The two towers of Asinelli and Garisenda in Bologna. The taller tower leans 7.3 feet westward, while the smaller tower leans 11 feet to the northeast.
Beautiful covered arcades were found on most streets providing welcome shade.

That library looks sooooo cool!! Why does Italy have all these leaning towers? Did they all have the same architect? ;)
