June 17 and 18 - Naples

We rode into Naples on another hot sunny day.  Being on the road for a few days now I'm beginning to better understand the traffic rules:

  •  If you're driving a scooter there are basically no rules.  You can stay on your side of the road, ride on the opposite side of the road, and even sidewalks if you want to.
  • Pedestrian crosswalks - you can essentially ignore them as a driver.  If there are people in the crosswalk they will move when they see you coming.  As a pedestrian, use the crosswalks at your own risk.
  • Most vehicles will stop at a red light - but stop signs are completely optional and mostly disregarded.
Today we did a walking tour of Naples, took a tour (in Italian) of the opera house and ate more street food!  Naples seems a bit gritty and grimy - not as polished as Rome or Florence - but an interesting place to see none the less.
Tomorrow we have about 50 miles to ride to a campground and the temperatures are gradually increasing so we plan on having an early night tonight and getting on the road early and get some miles completed before it gets too hot.
Probably no wifi for the next two days so I'll post again when we get wifi.

The narrow streets of Naples
Scooters everywhere
Galleria Umberto.  A beautiful mall with shops and office spaces.
This is a Sfogliatella pastry.  Incredibly thin, crispy layers of pastry filled with a mixture of ricotta, sugar, eggs, and candied orange zest.  Super good.

Images of Diego Maradona are all over Naples.  He is literally a God in Naples.

Another street and market in the city.
Part of the original city wall of Naples.

  1. The drivers in northern Italy (lakes) and especially Switzerland are much nicer to pedestrians and letting them cross. We've had a few come to a complete stop for us as we stood on the side of the road by the crosswalk. Our walking tour guide in Zurich told us the bike riders are the "cowboys" of the road, doing their own thing 😂
